Wood Flooring Installation
in Godalming, Haslemere
& Surrounding Areas
A timber floor that sits flat, stays quiet and looks right for decades, fitted by two specialists with 30 years' combined experience. One free visit, one fixed price.
Timber Floors Fitted
the Way They Should Be
Wood flooring installation is more than laying boards. A good floor starts underneath: a level, dry, sound subfloor, the right underlay or adhesive, correct expansion gaps and boards acclimatised to your home. Get those right and a timber floor will outlast the kitchen, the sofa and probably the paint colour.
We fit all types of timber flooring: solid, engineered, parquet and reclaimed. That includes herringbone and chevron patterns, wide plank oak and boards matched to original flooring in period homes. Harry surveys every job and brings samples to your home; Sam runs the fitting on site. You deal with the same people from first visit to final walkthrough.
Most of our installations are in homes across Godalming, Haslemere, Guildford, Petworth and the surrounding villages, where houses range from Victorian terraces with uneven joists to new builds with concrete slabs and underfloor heating. Each needs a different approach, and that is where experience saves you money.
Who this is for
- Homeowners renovating a ground floor or whole house
- Period properties needing boards matched to the originals
- Kitchen and extension projects with underfloor heating
- Anyone replacing tired carpet with a lasting timber floor
"They refurbished our 125 year old church floor with great care and attention to detail, and at a very competitive price. Harry & Sam have a clear passion for the work they do: thorough, knowledgeable, very reliable and a pleasure to have on-site."
What Goes Wrong When
Floors Are Fitted Badly
A poorly fitted floor rarely fails on day one. It fails six months later, once the heating has been on and the timber has moved. By then the fitter has gone and the cost of putting it right is often more than the original job.
Gaps, cupping and lifting
Timber expands and contracts with humidity. Without proper acclimatisation and expansion gaps, boards cup, crown or push up at the edges, and the only real fix is lifting and relaying.
Creaks and hollow spots
An uneven subfloor leaves voids under the boards. You hear it every time you walk across the room, and glued joints can crack along those weak points.
Damp damage
Laying timber over a slab without a suitable damp proof membrane lets moisture into the boards, causing swelling, staining and failed adhesive.
Ugly finishing details
Badly scribed edges, chunky beading and poorly handled door thresholds are what you notice every day, even if the boards themselves are fine.
Common mistakes we see
- Choosing the cheapest fitter and paying twice when the floor has to be relaid
- Skipping subfloor preparation to save a day
- Fitting solid wood over underfloor heating without checking it is suitable
- Ordering flooring before anyone has measured and surveyed the room
How We Do It,
Step by Step
The same people from first visit to final walkthrough. Harry surveys, Sam runs the job.
- 01
Free site visit
Harry visits, checks the subfloor, takes measurements and talks through how you use the room. He brings samples so you can see them in your own light.
- 02
Fixed-price quote
You receive one fixed price for the job, covering preparation, materials (if we supply them) and fitting, so there are no surprises on the final invoice.
- 03
Subfloor preparation
We level, repair and damp-proof the subfloor as needed, including damp proof membranes on concrete, so the floor has a sound base.
- 04
Precision installation
Boards are fitted with correct expansion allowances, careful scribing and neat thresholds. On period homes we can undercut original skirting rather than adding beading.
- 05
Final walkthrough
We walk the finished floor with you, check every edge and threshold, explain how to look after it and leave the room clean and ready to use.

Types of Wood Flooring
We Install
Every timber floor has different strengths. During your free visit we'll recommend what suits your subfloor, heating and lifestyle, not what is easiest for us to fit.
Solid wood flooring
Each board is a single piece of timber. Solid oak is the classic choice for living rooms, hallways and period homes, and can be sanded many times over its life. It moves more than engineered boards, so it needs a stable subfloor and careful fitting.
Engineered wood flooring
A real hardwood top layer bonded to a stable core. Engineered oak is less affected by changes in humidity, which makes it the usual choice for kitchens, extensions and rooms with underfloor heating. Thicker wear layers can still be sanded and refinished.
Parquet, herringbone and chevron
Pattern floors bring real character, but they demand accuracy. Herringbone and chevron need a precise set-out from the centre of the room so the pattern runs true through doorways. We have fitted herringbone engineered floors throughout downstairs rooms, including undercutting original Victorian skirting.
Reclaimed timber
Reclaimed boards and blocks suit older properties and add instant patina. They need sorting, cleaning and sometimes machining before fitting, and we'll be honest about whether a reclaimed batch is suitable.
Fitting methods
Depending on the subfloor, boards may be glued down, secret-nailed to timber joists or battens, or floated over a suitable underlay. The right method affects how the floor sounds, how it handles heat and how easily it can be repaired later.
Over underfloor heating
We fit timber over underfloor heating. Board choice, thickness and adhesive all matter, and the heating needs commissioning correctly before installation so the floor isn't stressed in its first winter.
Stairs and skirting
To finish the job properly we also fit on staircases and supply and install skirting boards, so floors and edges match.
Homes and other buildings
Most of our work is in private homes, but we work for anyone, from cottages to a 125-year-old church floor.
Before we arrive
- Clear the room of small items, ornaments and anything fragile.
- Tell us at the survey about any furniture that needs moving so we can plan for it.
- Let us know about pets, parking and access so the job runs smoothly.
- If you're supplying materials, have them delivered in good time.
- Plan where you'll live and walk while the room is out of use.
Looking after your floor
- Put felt pads under chair and table legs to prevent scratches.
- Use doormats at entrances to catch grit, the biggest cause of wear.
- Wipe up spills promptly rather than letting them sit.
- Clean with products suited to your floor's finish; we'll advise on the day.
- Use rugs in the busiest routes to spread wear over time.

A single room is often a day or two once the subfloor is ready. Whole ground floors take longer, especially with pattern floors or significant preparation. Your quote will give a realistic timeline.
